The Seven Legends: Self Portrait

Another piece I really like from the trip to Liverpool, was in The Walker. This piece is a painting by Albert Richards from 1939. This is a self portrait inspired by surrealist work which he saw exhibited in The walker in 1938.

Richards, Albert, 1919-1945; The Seven Legends: Self Portrait

Richards liked the idea of seeing himself in a dream-like world surrounded by devils and demons. There are seven incidents which take place behind him, this links to the title of the piece ‘The Seven Legends’. I like the idea of having the 7 different stories going on in the background of the piece I think it gives more meaning and keeps it open for interpretation for what the piece means.
I like the way he has used different shades of blue in this piece and the main colour being a very pale blue, this contrasts against the idea of the demons and devils as they are usually seen with dark colours like red and black which often link to death. But in this piece he has decided not to do the obvious thing, this might be because the demons and devils in the background aren’t a threat to him or it might be because he sees himself as demon/devil and doesn’t need to be afraid of them.
